License key handling exists since software version 2.1.4 and mainframe serial number 162. Since software version V3.2.5 some basic changes are done with the license-key storing.
Mainframe (MF)-Type is coupled with the back plane No (Serial No of the Switcher) and stored in the back plane.
Videostore und Texture/Matte Store are coupled with the serial number of the Output Processor and stored only there (only DD35).
All other software options like TALLY, ATL, VR_SET_MEx, ME_COUPLE are coupled with the back plane No (Serial No of the Switcher) and stored in the flash/license.txt file (Software up to V3.2.5).
From Software version V3.2.5 all other software options like TALLY, ATL, VR_SET_MEx, ME_COUPLE are coupled with the back plane No. and stored inside the backplane eeprom. In case of existing license file stored at the flash disk, this is still valid.
1. Software version < V3.2.5
The functionality of combinations between serial numbers and software versions can be seen in the following flow chart.
Note: This flow chart only refers to back plane related software options.
Principally an entry of license codes is not necessary when updating software in a mainframe of serial numbers less than 162, if the functionality keeps unchanged. However if the mainframe serial number is less than 162 and a license code is entered (the license.txt file will be generated on the flash disk), the switcher will behave like being a switcher more than serial number 162.
Result: The existence of a license.txt on the flash disk effects the need of license key handling concerning the options related to the mainframe (MF back plane). One of these options is TALLY, some additional options available since software 2.2.x are VRSET_MEx, ME-COUPLE, MF_TYPEx, which will not be activated automatically on switchers less than mainframe serial number 162!
The options VID_STORE and TXT_STORE are related to the Output Processor board. They can be installed from the INSTALL SYSTEM menu, but are not coupled with the back plane.
Important: If one of the ‘new‘ Options is installed on a switcher less than 162, the TALLY option will disappear after the license key is entered. Now, the option code for Tally has to be entered additionally.
Problem existing with E-Boxes of serial numbers less than 162 combined with RPS35-3 or RPS35-2/S panels (delivered only in particular): If the E-Box controller recognizes a mainframe with a serial number less than 162, the mainframe type will not picked out from the back plane. Instead the default panel type, the RPS35-4L(LX) is taken. For proper operation the option code for the correct mainframe type has also to be installed in this case.
Hint: Shell command LicMgrKey With this command the complete string of a license.txt can be entered directly. Connect your PC by HyperTerminal or Telnet to the Vxworks Shell and type: LicMgrKey"....." string of license.txt in quotation marks e.g. key="ME_COUPLE","1","0000:00:00","2000:10:06","167","ed77ee699b80e8c730eb" put the string with cut and paste after the command ME_COUPLE","1","0000:00:00","2000:10:06","167","ed77ee699b80e8c730eb“
Note: Can not be used for options Video- and Texture/Matte Store.
2. Software version > V3.2.5
Since software version V3.2.5 some basic changes are with the license-key storing. The license-keys will no longer stored at the flash-disk. They will be stored in the backplane EEPROM, read via I2C bus. All the license-files (sp_lisence.txt) installed by the menu “READ FILE” (Install – System – SW-Option) will be stored ONLY to the backplane. Newly delivered switcher with software >V3.2.5 do not have the license.txt file stored at the flash-disk. Only the temporary license-keys still were stored on the flash-disk. By newer switchers there is no longer a license.txt file available on the flash disk and the license.txt file will not stored to the HD when performing “Install/Ebox/copy to HD”. Great advantage when changing controller boards you do not need to take care of the license-keys. In case of older switchers with license.txt file at the flash-disk this is still valid. The keys not necessarily have to be stored to the backplane after software update.
In case a software version > V4.x.x has been installed, then it is possible to load the license.txt files to the backplane by means of the ``READ FILE menu`` (menu “Install - System - SW Option à Read file à Read file from). Important: the license.txt file from the flash-disk is not compatible to the sp_license.txt file that can be stored to the backplane.
